Recently, Yurya House in Athens has published an English version of a poetry collection by the Palestinian- Syrian poet Mahmoud Al Sersawi, who lives in Cyprus. This collection has been chosen and translated into English by the critic Kefah Jahjah, and it contains poems selected from his book “ Haffat al shaghaf”.
The collection is presented by the British professor of acoustics at the University of Wales George Rodosthenous, who said: "Mahmoud Al-Sersawi's poetry is full of sounds and colors (sadness, color of drought, color of lover) in a sensual experience that mixes the sounds of violins with clouds and the sea. He has a political tone that mixes the shadow of war with the desire of every human being to sleep quietly and peacefully”.
The British critic points out that the Sersawi writings involve pain, pain of deep loss and insistence on changing the current situation, so that his actions become a strategy to improve the self-vision of life with a new light.
"Sarsawi writes about sins, fear and purity in an impressive personal way, and he paints silence and loneliness strongly, linking depression with the sunset, and then giving them a voice that is the voice of rebellion, endurance and flexibility at the same time," concludes Rodosthenous.
Al Sarsawi’s book includes twelve poems from the collection “ Haffat Al Shaghaf”. In addition to some poems which are written by the poet during his staying in Cyprus, saying that "there is no old nor new in poetry, and poetry that is aesthetically different is constantly alive," he declared to one of the website. For the reason of translating this book into English in spite of his staying in Cyprus, the poet says: a Greek translation will be issue soon.
